The calls come amid concerns over drug abuse, exposure to inappropriate online content and indiscipline.
Muslim leaders, led by Sheikh Abubakar Bini, issued the warning as schools across the country prepare to close to pave the way for national examinations.
Bini said the freedom children enjoy during school holidays could expose them to irresponsible behaviour if parents failed to provide proper guidance and supervision.
“Uncontrolled freedom can lead children into irresponsible acts. Parents must take their responsibility seriously and ensure their children are properly guided,” he said.
Speaking to the press, Bini encouraged parents to assign their children household chores and other constructive activities to keep them occupied throughout the holiday period.
He also warned against allowing children unrestricted access to mobile phones, saying such devices could expose them to harmful and indecent content.
The cleric expressed concern over the accessibility of drugs to children, warning that the holiday period could expose them to substance abuse if left unsupervised.
Religious education encouraged during holidays
Bini further stressed the importance of education, calling on parents and other stakeholders to work together to promote discipline and responsible behaviour among young people.
He urged parents to ensure their children attend Sunday school and madrasa classes, noting that religious education and parental guidance were essential in shaping children's conduct.
“Parents should not neglect their children's upbringing during the holidays. They must guide them, keep them occupied and ensure they attend religious classes,” he said.
The leaders also urged parents to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue, warning that children must be protected from weather-related dangers.
They said parents should closely monitor their children's movements and prioritise their safety throughout the holiday period.
