Two players from Itigo Girls High School have earned places in the Kenya Rising Lionesses Under-18 squad that will represent the country at international rugby engagements in Tunisia and Senegal.
Joy Wanja and Micheal Mmboga were selected for the national team following their dedication, discipline and commitment during the selection and preparation process, according to a communication from the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU). The duo will join the Rising Lionesses for a World Rugby solidarity camp in Tunisia before travelling to Senegal for the Dakar Youth Olympics 2026.
In a letter seen by Education News, KRU Director of Rugby and Pathways Manager Paul Odera commended the school for supporting the players as they balanced their academic responsibilities with preparations for national team assignments. The union noted that the school had played an important role in enabling the two athletes to attend training camps and other team activities while continuing with their studies.
"Their consistent effort and willingness to learn have contributed significantly to them earning a place in the final squad," the letter stated.
KRU also appealed to the school administration to continue supporting the players as they prepare for the international assignments, noting the need to balance their academic commitments with their responsibilities to the national team.
The selection is a boost for Itigo Girls and a recognition of the growing contribution of school rugby to the development of young talent in Kenya. The Rising Lionesses' participation in the international engagements is expected to provide the young players with valuable exposure and experience as they develop their skills and compete at a higher level. KRU expressed gratitude to the school for its continued partnership in nurturing young athletes and providing them with opportunities to represent Kenya on the international stage.
