Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has called on young people to embrace mentorship, civic participation and leadership as the country prepares the next generation to take charge of Kenya’s future.
Murkomen said mentorship of young people was crucial in nurturing responsible leaders and shaping the direction of the nation.
The CS spoke after engaging student leaders from universities, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions and colleges under the Rift Youth Leadership Network in Nairobi.
He commended the student leaders for the positive impact they were making in their communities and pledged government support to help them achieve their aspirations and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Murkomen said the Government would continue working closely with young people to address challenges affecting them, including insecurity and drug and substance abuse.
“As a ministry, we will continue working closely with young people to ensure they have safe learning environments by stepping up the fight against drugs and substance abuse and strengthening security,” he said.

He urged student leaders to use their positions to promote positive change within their institutions and communities while preparing themselves for greater leadership responsibilities.
The CS also encouraged students and other young people across the country to participate actively in civic duties and national affairs.
He specifically called on them to contribute to the ongoing National Conversation on Kenya’s Future Beyond Vision 2030, saying their ideas and perspectives would be important in shaping the country’s long-term development agenda.
Murkomen said meaningful youth participation would help build a peaceful and prosperous Kenya, urging young people to take ownership of the country’s future rather than remain passive observers.
His remarks come amid increased calls for young people to play a central role in national development and leadership. Murkomen has previously backed the Beyond Vision 2030 conversation, describing it as an initiative aimed at shaping Kenya’s socio-economic future.
The CS said the Government would continue creating an environment where young people can learn, develop leadership skills and participate constructively in national affairs.
