The Ministry of Education (MoE), in partnership with the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy through the ICT Authority, has begun distributing teachers’ laptops and 65-inch interactive smart boards to 10,382 public Junior Secondary Schools across the country.

The World Bank-funded programme is aimed at accelerating the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum by integrating digital technology into teaching and learning.

Each targeted school will receive one teacher’s laptop and one interactive smart board to support learner-centred instruction.

The phased distribution exercise is already underway, with hundreds of schools having received the equipment while others are expected to benefit as the rollout progresses.

Upon completion, all the targeted schools will have access to the digital devices, making the initiative one of Kenya’s largest investments in classroom technology.

The programme is expected to strengthen the delivery of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum, which emphasises practical skills, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication and problem-solving.

Education officials have welcomed the initiative, saying that the digital devices will enable teachers to adopt more interactive teaching methods while improving learners’ engagement in the classroom.

“Interactive smart boards are expected to transform conventional classrooms by allowing teachers to integrate videos, animations, virtual experiments, simulations and other digital content into lessons.” One officer said

The technology is also expected to simplify the teaching of complex concepts in subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Geography through visual demonstrations.

The devices will also provide educators with a wider range of digital teaching resources to enrich classroom instruction.

For learners, the initiative is expected to expand access to digital libraries, online educational platforms and research materials, promoting independent learning, innovation and digital literacy.

These skills are increasingly viewed as essential for higher education, employment, entrepreneurship and participation in the global digital economy.

The programme is also expected to narrow the digital gap between urban and rural schools by providing learners with more equitable access to technology-enhanced education.

In addition, the devices have the potential to support inclusive learning through assistive technologies for learners with diverse educational needs.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the government’s investment, noting that technology has become an integral component of modern education.

They argue that equipping schools with digital learning tools will better prepare learners for a technology-driven labour market and an increasingly digital society.

However, stakeholders have cautioned that the programme’s success will depend on complementary investments in reliable electricity, internet connectivity, teacher training, equipment maintenance and the continuous development of quality digital learning content.

If effectively implemented, the initiative is expected to improve the quality of teaching and learning, strengthen the implementation of the Competency-Based Education curriculum and equip learners with the digital competencies required to thrive in the 21st century.

It also marks another milestone in Kenya’s efforts to build a modern, inclusive and globally competitive education system.
