Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is set to establish a campus daycare facility aimed at supporting young student-mothers as they pursue their academic studies.
The facility is expected to provide a safe, secure, nurturing and supportive environment where student-mothers can leave their infants while attending lectures, undertaking academic activities and participating in other university programmes.
The initiative responds to challenges faced by many young mothers in higher education, who often have to balance motherhood with academic responsibilities. Concerns about childcare, feeding and the general welfare of their children can affect their concentration and academic progress.

By establishing the daycare, the university aims to offer student-mothers a support system that allows them to manage their studies and parental responsibilities more effectively, without unnecessary barriers to continuing their education.
University officials say the move reflects a broader commitment to student welfare, gender inclusion and equal access to education, recognising that supporting students extends beyond classrooms, libraries and lecture halls to include facilities that respond to the diverse needs of learners.
