The University of Kabianga has issued new dress code guidelines barring students from wearing mini-skirts, skin-tight trousers, ripped jeans and other forms of clothing deemed inappropriate while on campus.
In an internal memo dated September 22, 2026, the Office of the Dean of Students directed all students to dress in a decent, modest and appropriate manner in line with the university’s Rules and Regulations Governing the Conduct and Discipline of Students.
The memo, signed by Acting Dean of Students Dr Joan Kimani, listed several types of clothing that students should not wear within the university.
They include micro and mini-skirts, skin-tight trousers, ragged, torn or ripped jeans, tube-cut blouses and T-shirts, low-cut blouses and dresses, micro-shorts and transparent dresses or attire that exposes bra straps.
Sleeveless T-shirts, clothing bearing obscene writings, sagging trousers and clothes that reveal the chest have also been prohibited.
The university further stated that slippers, Crocs and all plastic shoes are not considered official wear and should not be worn on campus.
Students warned of disciplinary action
The administration said the directive follows observations of what it termed indecent dressing among some students.
“All students should desist from inappropriate dressing while at the University as this may result in disciplinary action,” the memo states.
Staff members have also been directed not to serve students who are dressed in what the university considers indecent attire.
The directive cites Article 3.1.1 (a), (c), (d) and (e) of the Rules and Regulations Governing the Conduct and Discipline of Students.
The memo was copied to the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors in charge of Administration and Finance and Academic, Research and Student Affairs, the Principal of the College of Health Sciences, Chief Finance Officer and Senior Legal Officer.
