The mid-term break which will commence on Friday, 19Th November, 2021 will now apply to both Primary and Secondary Schools.

The students will now return to school on Tuesday 23Rd November, 2021.

In a clarification Circular dated November 3, 2021 addressed to all Regional and County Directors of Education, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Early Learning and Basic Education Dr. Julius Jwan clarified that the mid-term break will apply to both primary and secondary schools.

“Reference is made to the Ministry of Education circular Ref. No MOE/HQS/3/13/3 (67) and dated 1st November, 2021. The mid-term break applies to all secondary and primary schools,” reads the Circular in part which was copied to Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha, Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Dr. Nancy Macharia, and Chairpersons of Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA), Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (KEPSHA) and National Parents Association (NPA).

The Circular was released hours after a meeting with Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu and Dr. Jwan this morning.

Speaking to Education News on phone Oyuu confirmed that they had met with the PS and agreed on the mid-term break to include primary schools adding that even primary school teachers and leaners required a break.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof.  George Magoha however had further made the clarification when he opened a conference on technology and innovation at the Murang’a University of Technology this Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

In a Circular dated November 1, 2021 to all Regional and County Directors of Education Dr.  Jwan directed the officials to ensure secondary schools across the country are closed for mid-term break on November 19.

The communication by the PS was, however, silent on primary schools’ break, prompting the clarification by Magoha on Wednesday.
