Some schools are releasing students for mid-term break earlier than expected due to planned anti-Finance Bill protests.

This has added burden to parents to provide fare for their children who are travelling home early as the break was scheduled to start on Wednesday June 26.

Some parents say that have received messages from schools requesting them to pick up their children today.

The messages, sent via mobile phones, mention the recent unrest as well as planned demonstrations tomorrow June 25 as the main cause of the early release for the mid-term break.

“Dear parent/guardian. Due to the ongoing maandamano (demonstrations), you are advised to pick your child from school for mid-term break on Monday, June 24 from 10am instead of the earlier communicated date. She is expected to report back on Monday, July 1 by 1pm. Please make the necessary transport arrangement,” reads a message sent to a parent.

There are also reports that some boarding schools are releasing students over uncertainty due to heightened tension in the country. There are concerns that transport and movement could be affected.

According to some parents, schools are taking precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of students going home.

“It’s good to take these precautionary measures, but I am concerned because some parents now have to suddenly travel for hundreds of kilometers to pick their children at a short notice,” said Veronica Mwende, a parent.

The Ministry of Education had altered the mid-term break dates, due to floods caused by heavy rains earlier this year which led to the opening of schools pushed ahead by two weeks.
