Government announces mid-term break for secondary schools

The government has finally bowed to pressure from stakeholders and allowed all the Secondary School students to proceed for mid-term break as from Friday November 19, 2021.

In a circular dated 1st November, 2021 Principal Secretary in the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education Dr. Julius Jwan has directed all Regional and County Directors of Education to inform the School Principals within their jurisdiction concerning the mid-term break for secondary schools. The break will end Tuesday 23rd November, 2021.

“As you are aware, the Ministry of Education issued school term dates vide Circular Ref. MOE /CONF/G5 dated 3rd December, 2020. It has been decided that the half term break will commence on Friday, 19th November, 2021. The students will report back on Tuesday 23rd November, 2021,” the Circular reads.

It adds that, “you are required to bring this information to the attention of all Principals of Secondary Schools within your area of jurisdiction.”

A good number of Secondary Schools in the country have recently reported fire outbreaks, with student unrest situation that has been attributed to the crash programme currently in place.

The Second term commenced on October 11, 2021 and will end on December 23, 2021 then followed by a ten-day holiday; while third term will commence on January 3, 2022 and ends on March 4, 2022.

The Circular however is silent on primary schools mid-term break.
