Mauritius job scam: TikToker faces court for allegedly defrauding Kenyans

TikToker Maria Wangare Kamunge, popularly known as Rish Kamunge, has been taken to court for allegedly orchestrating a fraudulent job scheme that targeted Kenyans seeking employment in Mauritius.

In a statement released today, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that Kamunge, who serves as the Director of Trustpine Travel Agency, collected payments ranging from Sh200,000 to Sh400,000 from job seekers for opportunities that did not exist.

“Maria Wangare Kamunge, alias Rish Kamunge, the Director of Trustpine Travel Agency, has been arraigned for her involvement in a job scam that targeted Kenyans seeking employment in Mauritius. Victims reported paying between Sh200,000 and Sh400,000 for job placements, only to discover that the promised opportunities were nonexistent,” reads part of the DCI statement.

According to the DCI, some victims even travelled to Mauritius, only to find themselves stranded at the airport without assistance. Left with no alternative, they were eventually deported back to Kenya.

Investigations indicate that Kamunge received KSh12.9 million from 43 victims. She has been remanded at the Capital Hill Police Station, and her case is scheduled for mention on Friday.

“Investigations have revealed that 43 victims sent KSh12.9 million to the suspect. Rish Kamunge appeared in court for custodial orders and was remanded at Capital Hill Police Station,” the DCI stated.

The agency has also urged other victims of the alleged scam to come forward and report their cases at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations urges anyone who might have fallen victim to this job scam to come forward and report the matter at the Central Police Station in Nairobi,” the DCI added.
