A sombre mood has engulfed Kakamega High School following the death of a Form Three student on Sunday, July 20, 2025, after hitting the ball during sports. He stepped back and collapsed in the field.
The Chief Principal, Dr. Julius Mambili, addressing the press, disclosed that the late student jumped up and hit the ball, but did not score when he came down. It appeared that something was not right, and he just collapsed.
The principal confirmed that on Sunday at noon, he received information from one of the teachers on duty regarding a student who had collapsed in the field.
The deceased, David Owino Oduor, was admitted to the school three years ago.
The young man was rushed to the school clinic, and after examination, it was established that the condition had deteriorated. Mambili directed the boy to be rushed to Kakamega County General Hospital.

The doctor in charge quickly examined him, intending to ascertain the condition, and unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.
The young man had no medical history that would confirm his inability to function. “What I gathered from the boys who were with him was that they were having a normal play.” Noted Mambili, who quickly rushed to the hospital and was with the doctor, who explained to him that it could have been a heart condition that is yet to be confirmed after the postmortem.
He called both parents from Eldoret and subsequently reported to the police. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrived at the school and launched an investigation.
Following the passing of the student, a series of meetings has been carried out by the Principal, as it’s a tragic incident, describing the late student as a normal, very vibrant, and spotless individual.
However, the late student was a strong player in class competitions. “The boy does not play for Green Commandos but plays for the class team and is a top scorer. He scored two goals, and these would have been gone,” Mambili revealed.
