Youth in Malindi Sub-County, Kilifi County, have been urged to engage in meaningful income-generating activities to improve their livelihoods instead of indulging in excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse.
Speaking to Education News in his office in Malindi Town recently, Malindi Deputy County Commissioner David Lusava expressed concern over the rising rate of alcohol and drug abuse among young people in the area.
He lamented that many youths in the sub-county spend most of their time loitering in urban centres and engaging in substance abuse rather than participating in productive activities that could earn them a living.
“This trend has greatly contributed to low education levels in the area,” noted the Deputy County Commissioner.
Lusava stated that the government has put measures in place to crack down on individuals involved in the sale of drugs to youths in the region. He warned that anyone found selling drugs to young people would be arrested and prosecuted.

He also cautioned students against excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse, noting that the vice has contributed to poor performance in national examinations among schools in the area.
The Deputy County Commissioner further called on education stakeholders to work together and report individuals involved in selling drugs to students so that swift action can be taken against them without further delay.
