- Victor Makanda, principal of St. Mary’s High School Yala and outgoing Siaya County KSSHA chairman, has taken over as Nyanza region KESSHA chairman from Dr George Opiyo Nyangwe, who retired this month as senior principal of Dr Aloo Gumbi Secondary School
- Dr Nyangwe also stepped down from both his Kisumu County KSSHA post and the regional chairmanship.
St. Mary’s High School Yala principal Victor Makanda has been installed as the new chairman of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) for the Nyanza region, taking over the mantle from Dr George Opiyo Nyangwe in a handover ceremony that drew tributes from across the region’s education fraternity.
Makanda, who doubles as the current KESSHA chairman for Siaya County, previously served as Nyangwe’s vice chairman before stepping into the top regional seat. He assumes the role at a time when his predecessor has exited both the classroom and association leadership following his retirement as senior principal of Dr Aloo Gumbi Secondary School in Kisumu County earlier this month, a departure that also ended his tenure as KESSHA head for Kisumu County.
The handover took place in the presence of Nyanza regional director of education Lawrence Karuntimi, who used the occasion to pay tribute to Nyangwe’s contribution to school leadership at both county and regional level, describing him as a unifying figure throughout his time in various leadership capacities.

Karuntimi urged other school heads across the region to emulate the example set by Nyangwe, pointing to the many lessons he had imparted to colleagues over the years. He added that principals occupy a vital position in the management of education, underscoring the significance of the leadership transition taking place within the association.
In his remarks, Dr Nyangwe thanked fellow school heads for the support extended to him throughout his time in office and wished his successor prosperity as he settles into the new role. Makanda, in turn, described his predecessor as a diligent leader who mentored numerous school heads during his tenure, and pledged to build on the foundation Nyangwe had laid for the association moving forward.
