  • Thousands of retired teachers and other pensioners will soon access pension services through Huduma Centres nationwide.
  • The initiative aims to reduce travel costs, improve service delivery and strengthen retirement planning.
  • Huduma Centre staff are undergoing specialised training to support pension enquiries, applications and retirement services.

Thousands of teachers and other retirees across Kenya are set to benefit from a major government initiative that will bring pension and retirement services closer to wananchi through selected Huduma Centres nationwide.

The move is expected to spare pensioners the costly and time-consuming journeys they have traditionally made to Nairobi and other regional offices in pursuit of retirement benefits.

The initiative, unveiled jointly by Huduma Kenya and the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA), forms part of the Government’s broader agenda of decentralising public services and making them more accessible, efficient and citizen-centred.

According to a statement issued by Huduma Kenya, frontline officers are currently undergoing specialised training to equip them with the skills required to assist members of the public with retirement planning, pension contributions, pension applications, benefit claims and other retirement-related services.

The training programme is designed to prepare Huduma Centre staff to handle basic pension enquiries, provide professional guidance to retirees and workers approaching retirement, and refer clients to the appropriate institutions whenever specialised assistance is required.

The initiative marks a significant expansion of the services offered at Huduma Centres, which have become the Government’s flagship one-stop centres for public services.

Currently, Huduma Centres only enable citizens to check the status of pension applications.

Retirees seeking other pension services, including processing retirement benefits, following up delayed payments, submitting pension documents and obtaining guidance on retirement entitlements, are often required to visit the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) or National Social Security Fund (NSSF) offices.

For many retired teachers and public servants living in distant counties, this has meant repeated and costly trips to Nairobi and regional offices.

Relief for retired teachers

For thousands of retired teachers, the current arrangement has been financially and physically demanding.

Many live on limited incomes and depend entirely on their monthly pensions. Travelling hundreds of kilometres often requires significant expenditure on transport, accommodation and meals.

Some pensioners spend several days away from home waiting for documents to be processed, while others make multiple follow-up visits before their cases are concluded.

The burden has been particularly heavy for elderly retirees living with age-related illnesses or reduced mobility.

Once fully implemented, teachers and other retirees will be able to access a wide range of pension services at Huduma Centres located much closer to their homes.

Instead of travelling to Nairobi, pensioners will receive guidance, submit documents, seek clarification and obtain assistance from trained Huduma officers within their counties.

The programme is expected to reduce travel expenses, save time and improve the efficiency of pension service delivery.

Beyond convenience, the initiative is also expected to restore dignity to retirees who have devoted decades of service to the nation.

Strengthening retirement planning

The initiative supports the Government’s broader strategy of decentralising services through Huduma Centres, with the long-term objective of expanding service delivery to all 290 constituencies.

Another major benefit is the promotion of a stronger culture of retirement planning among Kenyan workers.

Many employees only begin seeking information about pensions shortly before retirement, often leading to confusion, delayed applications and avoidable errors.

With trained officers available at Huduma Centres, workers will be able to receive timely advice on pension contributions, retirement planning and benefit eligibility well before they retire.

The programme is also expected to reduce congestion at RBA and NSSF offices by allowing specialised officers to concentrate on complex pension cases while routine enquiries are handled through Huduma Centres.

Teachers, who constitute one of Kenya’s largest groups of public servants, are expected to benefit significantly from the initiative.

Every year, thousands retire after decades of classroom service, many facing delays and logistical challenges in accessing their retirement benefits.

The decentralisation of pension services promises to simplify the process while reducing financial strain.

The initiative will also benefit retirees from the civil service, county governments, state corporations and other public institutions.

By bringing services closer to wananchi, the Government is promoting equity in service delivery and ensuring retirees in rural and marginalised areas enjoy the same level of access as those living in major urban centres.

Ultimately, the rollout of pension and retirement services through Huduma Centres represents a significant milestone in Kenya’s ongoing public sector reforms.

If successfully implemented nationwide, the programme will save retirees millions of shillings in travel costs, reduce delays and strengthen confidence in public institutions.
