Machakos learners embrace tree planting as school launches environmental campaign

An initiative to conserve the environment in schools was launched in Machakos on Monday, July 28, 2025 with a call to plant more trees.

The Naturehub Collective Community Organisation launched the Greening Schools Initiative at the Ultimate Leaders Academy Muumandu in Machakos, where they planted 200 tree seedlings and pledged to establish a tree nursery for the school to propagate and share with neighbouring schools.

Speaking at the event, Naturehub representative Frederick Kioko urged the students to take care of the environment, as it plays a pivotal role in their daily lives and general well-being.

Kioko said the initiative was not a one-off event but will be rolled out progressively to reach a wider community.

The organisation will set up a tree seedling nursery with a capacity of 5000 to 10,000 seedlings, Mr Kioko said.

Head teacher Patrick Muange said the learners had an opportunity to participate in tree planting practically.

He said that conservation of the environment was a major exercise, as it ensures fresh air and helps attract rainfall.

Muange said tree planting can also be an income-generating activity.

“The exercise has been successful. Our learners have been encouraged to conserve the environment through tree planting, which ensures we are safe in terms of getting fresh air and also helps in attracting rainfall,” said Mr Muange.

He encouraged parents and children to take part in planting trees and conserving the environment.
