Lentoijoni: No teacher has stayed in one job group for over 17 years

  • Antonina Lentoijoni has told the Parliamentary Education Committee that no teacher has stayed in one job group for more than 17 years.
  • Lentoijoni has appeared before the committee for vetting as a TSC commissioner nominee alongside Wilson Sossion.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) commissioner nominee Antonina Lentoijoni has told the Parliamentary Education Committee that no teacher has remained in a single job group for more than 17 years, dismissing concerns over prolonged career stagnation within the teaching service.

Lentoijoni made the remarks on Thursday, August 20, 2026, during her vetting before the committee as she defended her suitability to serve as a TSC commissioner. Responding to questions on teachers’ career progression, she said all affected teachers had been promoted in 2017.

Her remarks come amid persistent concerns among teachers over career progression, with some educators arguing that delays in promotion have affected morale and professional growth.

Sossion calls for clear TSC policy on rewarding teachers with higher qualifications

Lentoijoni is being vetted alongside former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion, with the two nominees set to serve as TSC commissioners if approved by Parliament.

The issue of teacher promotions is expected to remain a major focus for the commission, particularly as teachers continue to push for clearer and more predictable career progression structures. The nominees’ appearance before the committee comes at a time when the TSC is under scrutiny over a range of issues affecting teachers, including remuneration, promotions, salary deductions and recognition of higher academic qualifications.
