Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut wants the CS Education George Magoha to explain to the public why the University of Nairobi made the decision to increase both tuition and accommodation fee.
The university increased fees for Master’s degree courses including Communication and MBA to more than Sh600,00 from an average of Ksh275,000.
The accommodation fee was increased sevenfold to Sh40,000 from Sh6,000 per year.
“Could the Cabinet Secretary explain the rationale for the recent increase in fees and student hostel accommodation cost by the University of Nairobi?” Chepkut asked in the request for ministerial statement in parliament.
The MP further questioned if there was any consultation before implementing the revised fees structure.
Also, the lawmaker wants to know if the fee increment affects all students.
CS Education is therefore required to submit the report to the Departmental Committee on Education.
Tuition fee for degree courses such as commerce, economic, and law were also increased by 70 per cent.
