The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has officially announced the dates and guidelines for the 2026 Regional Council Steering Committee elections, with delegates set to elect regional officials on August 21, 2026.

In a circular dated July 15, 2026, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori informed all branch secretaries that the elections will be conducted in line with the union’s constitution and an election timetable approved by the National Executive Board in consultation with the National Governing Council.

The circular directs branch officials to immediately share the election notice and regulations with all members interested in contesting various regional positions to enable them to familiarise themselves with the requirements before the polls.

Nomination fees and eligibility

According to the election guidelines, only members who are eligible voters in their respective regions will be allowed to contest.

Aspirants will be required to pay nomination fees ranging from Sh20,000 to Sh50,000, depending on the position sought.

Candidates vying for the position of Regional Secretary will pay the highest nomination fee of Sh50,000, while those contesting for Regional Chairperson and Regional Treasurer will each pay Sh30,000.

Aspirants seeking the positions of Regional Vice Chairperson, Assistant Secretary, Vice Treasurer and Women Representative will pay Sh20,000.

KUPPET has directed that all nomination fees be deposited into a designated Equity Bank account before submission of nomination papers.

Candidates must attach original bank deposit slips to their nomination forms and forward them to the national office through their respective branch offices.

The deadline for payment of nomination fees and submission of nomination papers is August 15, 2026, six days before the elections.

Voting procedures

The regulations further provide that each candidate will be allowed one polling agent during the election.

Delegates participating in the voting exercise must be among the 14 elected branch officials and must present their original national identity cards for verification.

Voting will take place during the Regional Council meeting and will close at 2p.m.

Regional elections are expected to be held at designated regional headquarters or other approved venues.

The union has issued a stern warning against election-related violence, stating that members who engage in or incite violence at polling stations will be disqualified from voting.
