The Executive Secretary of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Kisumu Branch, Zablon Awange, has written to the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer (RCIO) demanding urgent action over persistent death threats and harassment.

In a strongly worded letter dated June 17, 2025, Awange raised serious concerns about repeated threats allegedly coming from a specific phone number.

He described the threats as “grave and actionable” under Kenyan law and said they specifically target his safety in his capacity as a union leader.

Awange drew chilling parallels between his current ordeal and the unresolved death of former official Albert Ojwang’, who, according to the letter, had reported similar threats before his untimely demise. He noted that the unresolved nature of Ojwang’s case has heightened his fear and sense of insecurity.

“These repeated threats are not only deeply disturbing but also evoke a profound sense of apprehension,” Awange wrote, stressing the urgency for intervention.

Awange called on the DCI to identify and prosecute the perpetrators. He warned that failure to act would embolden the criminals and erode public trust in law enforcement’s ability to protect citizens, particularly educators.

“This complaint serves as a formal notification and an insistent demand for a comprehensive and expedited investigation,” he stated, adding that he is ready to cooperate fully with the investigating officers.

However, Awange told Education News on June 18, that a number of the issues raised in the letter have been addressed by relevant authorities.
