KUPPET asks TSC to reinstate burial funds deductions for teachers

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called for the reinstatement of the deductions of the Burial Benevolent Funds (BBF) which were stopped by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) last month.

In a memo signed by KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori addressed to TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Nancy Macharia dated May 30, 2014 and seen by Education News, urged that TSC reconsider the decision to halt the BBF deductions until the union guides the Commission on the same.

“The union has noted with concern your intention to stop BBF deductions for KUPPET members. We strong urge you to rescind the decision on the BBF deductions until properly guided by us in the manner set out in our relations,” the memo reads in part.

Miss said that the union is in the process of convening a Special Delegates Conference to give proper guidance on BBF.

According to Misori, the meeting will be convened soon by the national officials, as some of the officials have been away out of the country.

“In the meantime, the resolutions of the 2021 Annual Delegates Conference still stand. Therefore, please be guided by our communication vide letter Ref KUPPET/TSC/015/21, dated May 17, 2021 and maintain the current BBF deductions in respect of all KUPPET members,” the memo further reads.

TSC on May 21 wrote to KUPPET saying the Commission is halting the BBF deductions following a petition in court by five union branch officials who said they were illegal.

“The Petition challenges the legality of the KUPPET Social Welfare/BBF deductions, as exhibited by Centrex Goole’s payslip, and enjoins the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the TSC for the deductions.

“In light of the desire by the union through the said officials, the Commission will stop forthwith all deductions of KUPPET BBF made pursuant to your letter referenced above,” TSC said in the letter.

To ensure that a teacher who passes away has a dignified funeral, TSC has been deducting money from teachers pay checks.
