KUPPET to create slots for JSS teachers in union leadership

KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori with National Chairman Omboko Milemba and other officials in a past press briefing. The union has resolved to entice JSS teachers with some slots in its leadership structure.

The Kenya National Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has resolved to create slots in their union for the Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers from branch to national level.

The decision was reached after the union held a meeting on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Kasarani Sports View, Nairobi, where 54 National Governing Council (NGC) delegates attended.

The move comes as the two major unions KUPPET and KNUT tussle over the control of JSS, taking opposing stances on how the intern teachers’ labour dispute with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should be resolved, with KUPPET taking a confrontational approach while KNUT chose the diplomatic way.

Among other things that the union discussed are the contentious constitutional amendments, upon whose resolution a draft document will be sent to the branches for scrutiny.

The union Secretary General was allowed to give a presser concerning the show-cause letters to JSS intern teachers.

TSC had issued some 7,357 JSS teachers show-cause letters ahead of any disciplinary action for participating in demonstrations when they are supposed to be in class.

The union agreed that the Branch Benevolent Fund (BBF) should be reinstated after TSC had stopped the deductions from KUPPET members. The BBF was approved during the union Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) of April 3, 2021.

There was a little drama at the beginning of the event when five union executive secretaries were denied entry as a result of a court petition. However, they were later allowed in.
