KNUT asks TSC to recall show-cause letters to rebelling JSS teachers

Collins Oyuu, KNUT Secretary-General. The union wants to take up the JSS standoff matter with TSC, but asks the employer to withdraw the disciplinary letters sent to the teachers.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called on their employer the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to recall all the show cause letters which have been issued to rebelling Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers.

Addressing the media this evening at KNUT headquarters in Nairobi, the union Secretary General Collins Oyuu asked the commission to conform to the Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015) in recruitment and employment of teachers, saying they are ready to engage with TSC in a high level discussion.

Oyuu urged the interns to swallow the humble pie and agree to hand over the matter to KNUT, asserting that the union has demonstrated interest to help find a lasting solution.

“We suspected in the long run the employer would issue these teachers with show cause letters with an intention of commencing disciplinary action against them. Indeed, these teachers have already been served,” said Oyuu.

The union has further called on the commission to develop a framework that would assist to amicably settle the dispute with interns.

It has further called on all demonstrating teachers to report to their work stations immediately as the union has already taken over the case, urging TSC not to victimize any teacher who was involved in the demonstrations.

He reiterated that the union is currently working on a return to work arrangement with the employer on behalf of the intern teachers.
