The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has mourned the death of its former Chairman, Prof. Raphael Munavu, describing him as a transformative leader who strengthened the credibility of Kenya’s examination system.
In an official message, KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr David Njengere said Prof. Munavu’s tenure between 2000 and 2010 was defined by integrity, professionalism, and far-reaching reforms that shaped the Council’s modern outlook.

“Prof. Munavu provided steadfast leadership and strategic direction to the institution. His tenure was marked by a strong commitment to integrity, credibility, and the strengthening of Kenya’s national assessment systems,” said Dr Njengere.
He noted that the late professor played a critical role in restoring public trust in national examinations at a time when credibility concerns threatened confidence in the system.
Through firm policies and institutional reforms, he helped entrench accountability and transparency in the management of examinations and certification.
KNEC further hailed Prof. Munavu as a distinguished scholar and dedicated public servant whose wisdom and experience guided the Council through a pivotal period of growth and transformation.
“His leadership remains a benchmark of excellence and continues to inspire our mission of delivering quality educational assessment and credible certification,” Njengere added.
Prof. Munavu, who was awarded the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS), leaves behind a legacy deeply embedded in Kenya’s education sector.
