Kinale Hybrid Senior School in Kiambu County has secured a new partnership with Germany-based T5RA that will link its successful girls’ rugby programme with education and international opportunities.
The partnership follows an impressive display by Kinale at the Christie 7s, where the school caught the attention of the German organisation during a match against Mwamba Rugby Club, one of Kenya’s established women’s rugby sides.
T5RA said Kinale’s determination and talent stood out during the tournament, prompting discussions between its officials and the school’s rugby coach, Allan “Bush” Okiyo, on possible areas of collaboration.
The partnership comes at a time when Kinale has established itself as a dominant force in girls’ school rugby in Kenya and East Africa. Despite starting its rugby programme only a few years ago, the school has won national schools titles in both rugby sevens and 15s, and currently holds the East African Schools Rugby 7s championship. Kinale has also produced players who have attracted attention beyond the local schools’ competition, underlining the rapid growth of its programme.
T5RA chief executive officer Sven Maibaum, who is also the founder of Schaumburg Rugby in Germany, later visited the school alongside the organisation’s Academic Director, Desmond Alvin Otieno. They were received by Kinale Chief Principal Vulfrida Simiyu and Head of Sports Steve Karanja.

Under the new partnership, the two sides will work together in areas including rugby development, education and international exposure. T5RA plans to support the school with rugby training equipment while also introducing German Project Days designed to expose students to the German language, education and vocational opportunities. The partnership will further explore exchange opportunities to Germany for outstanding students who demonstrate strong academic and sporting potential.
The initiative is expected to use rugby and club participation as a platform for helping students adapt to new environments while opening pathways for further education and vocational training. T5RA said its long-term vision is to create opportunities for young Kenyan athletes to combine sporting development with education, language skills and international experiences.
The first German Project Day at Kinale is expected to take place soon, marking the beginning of what the partners hope will become a long-term relationship.

The partnership adds an international dimension to a rugby programme that has risen rapidly to the top of the Kenyan and East African schools’ game. The school’s success in both the 7s and 15s disciplines has made it one of the leading institutions in girls’ rugby, while the new partnership could provide its players with opportunities beyond the rugby pitch.
The collaboration also strengthens the growing link between sport and education, as schools increasingly seek to use talent development to create wider opportunities for their students.
