The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) Staff Choir has been named Best Institutional Staff Choir at the 98th Kenya Music Festival State Concert held at the Bungoma State Lodge and graced by President William Samoei Ruto.
The award followed the choir’s outstanding performance at the national level of the 98th Kenya Music Festival, where KICD participated in eight classes, including solo performances, at Kibabii University in Bungoma County.
The festival brought together teams from across the country to showcase their talent, creativity and skills. KICD Chief Executive Officer Prof Charles Ong’ondo received the award on behalf of the Institute.
Speaking during the concert, President Ruto said music had gained a formal place in the education process.
“We are making music no longer something on the side. It’s now formally part of the education process. The creative space is the future,” President Ruto said.
The 98th Kenya Music Festival was held under the theme, “Enhancing Creative Economy through Knowledge, Skill and Artistic Production for Sustainable Development,” highlighting the role of knowledge, skills and artistic production in advancing the creative economy and sustainable development.
At the national level at Kibabii University, Prof Ong’ondo congratulated all participating teams, noting that some had exceeded expectations while others had met expectations.
“Some have exceeded expectations while others have met expectations. Reaching the national level is, in itself, a significant achievement. I congratulate all the teams for their hard work, dedication, creativity and impressive performances,” Prof Ong’ondo said.
Nurturing talent
The KICD Staff Choir’s achievement reflects the Institute’s commitment to nurturing talent and developing skills through creative activities while promoting Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage.

The achievement also demonstrates KICD’s commitment, both professionally and practically, to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) vision of nurturing every learner’s potential.
