The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing learner potential through Competency-Based Education (CBE), talent development, and innovative learning resources.
Speaking during the Rangwe Sub-County Kenya Music Festival at Oneno Comprehensive School on Thursday, 4th June 2026, KICD Chief Executive Officer Prof. Charles Ong’ondo said co-curricular activities remain a critical component of the education reforms aimed at helping learners identify and develop their talents from an early age.
Prof. Ong’ondo noted that the festival provided a platform for learners to showcase their abilities in music, performance, and creative arts, which are among the pathways available under the Competency-Based Curriculum.
“One of the key reasons we are reforming the curriculum is to nurture every learner’s potential. Many of our learners have immense talent in music and performing arts. These opportunities help learners discover their strengths and prepare them for future pathways in arts and sports,” he said.

The CEO commended teachers for their dedication in preparing learners for the festival, describing them as key partners in the successful implementation of Competency-Based Education.
The event was hosted at the newly completed Prof. Ong’ondo Multipurpose Hall at Oneno Comprehensive School, a facility that Prof. Ong’ondo said represents a significant investment in educational infrastructure within Rangwe Sub-County.

He revealed that the hall is set to evolve into a modern learning resource centre equipped with digital facilities capable of streaming educational content directly from KICD, including curriculum support materials and recordings of national-level performances from the Kenya Music Festival and the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival.
“This hall will not only host events. It will serve as a multipurpose learning resource centre where learners and teachers can access educational resources, digital lessons and learning experiences that enhance curriculum delivery,” said Prof. Ong’ondo.

The KICD CEO further emphasized the importance of giving back to communities through development projects that directly benefit learners. Reflecting on his own educational journey at Oneno Comprehensive School, where he studied from Standard One to Standard Seven, Prof. Ong’ondo encouraged leaders and professionals to support institutions that shaped their lives.
To motivate participation and recognize excellence, Prof. Ongondo supported the festival through the provision of participation certificates for learners, recognition certificates for trainers, meals for participants, and trophies for outstanding schools.
As learners competed for progression to the county level, Prof. Ong’ondo challenged adjudicators to uphold fairness and quality, noting that talent development remains central to KICD’s vision of ensuring every learner realizes their full potential through education.
The festival brought together learners, teachers, adjudicators, and education stakeholders from across Rangwe Sub-County in a celebration of creativity, talent, and the transformative power of education.
