Schools in Kiambu County have been directed to strictly adhere to official school operating hours as the government moves to protect learners from risks associated with early morning and late evening movements.

In a circular dated May 26, 2026, Kiambu County Commissioner George Matundura instructed all Deputy County Commissioners to ensure that schools within their jurisdictions fully comply with the Basic Education Regulations of 2015.

The directive follows concerns raised during a regional stakeholders’ consultative forum on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, suicide, teenage pregnancies, and child welfare issues held at Nyeri National Polytechnic on May 21, 2026.

According to the circular, stakeholders observed that the continued flouting of official school hours by some learning institutions has contributed to increased vulnerability among learners.

Under Regulation 84 of the Basic Education Regulations, official class hours for all day public and private schools are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while co-curricular activities should run between 3:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. The regulations also prohibit day schools from requiring learners to report before 7:15 a.m.

The county administration warned that heads of institutions found violating the regulations would be held personally liable.

Authorities expressed concern that, despite the regulations being in place, many learners continue to face risks while travelling in darkness during the early morning hours and late evenings.
