Khwisero Technical and Vocational College (TVC) has joined a select group of institutions in the country to embrace smart energy, following the installation of a 60kVA solar power system that now provides the institution with reliable three-phase electricity.
The upgrade places the college among the first 100 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions nationwide to transition towards renewable energy, significantly improving power reliability across its operations.
The solar system now powers all machines and key services within the institution, ensuring uninterrupted 24-hour electricity supply with no reported blackouts.

This development has enhanced training activities, assessment processes, security, and overall administrative operations, while also extending benefits to the surrounding community.
According to the Senior Principal, Mabel Wanjala, the system is expected to substantially reduce operational costs, particularly electricity bills. She noted that grid power may now be reserved mainly for heavy automotive engineering equipment expected from the government, as the institution continues to position itself as a Centre of Excellence in Automotive Engineering.

She further explained that the solar installation powers office operations, computer laboratories, lighting systems, and security floodlights, strengthening both academic delivery and campus safety.
In addition, the system supports a solar-powered borehole that supplies clean water not only to the college but also to Khwisero Primary School and nearby community members. The institution has also integrated innovation in renewable energy use, including a low-voltage portable green welding machine powered by solar energy, reinforcing its shift towards green technology.

Since its establishment in January 2023, under the leadership of Christopher Aseka, the college has recorded rapid growth in both student enrolment and academic programmes. Course offerings have expanded from seven to more than 25, ranging from Level 4 to Level 6, all accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority.
Under its 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, the institution is also seeking to expand infrastructure to accommodate its growing student population, which currently stands at 856 trainees within just three years of operation.
