Kericho Township TVC successfully hosted the 4th Kenya Association of Technical Training Institution (KATTI) South Rift Valley Region Athletics Championship, an event that saw a surge in participation and intense competition, with top teams securing qualification for the national championships set to be held in Nairobi.
The championships brought together 27 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions- the highest number recorded since the regional competition was introduced—marking a significant milestone for the Kenya Association of Technical and Training Institutions (KATTI) sporting calendar.
Speaking during the event, South Rift KATTI Sports Chairman Harrison Okello said the championships continue to play a key role in nurturing emerging athletic talent within TVET institutions.
He noted that the competition offers a critical platform for students to showcase their abilities while sharpening their discipline and competitiveness ahead of higher-level contests.
“The KATTI fraternity sees this as an opportunity to nurture talent and prepare athletes who can compete at national and international levels. We expect new records to be set as participation continues to grow,” said Okello, who also serves as Chief Principal of Kipsinende Technical and Training Institute.

Organisers emphasized strict adherence to discipline and integrity throughout the event, noting that all participants were required to comply with established KATTI sports regulations. They warned that any non-students found participating would be handled in accordance with the governing rules.
South Rift KATTI Chairman Sammy K. Chemoiwa commended Kericho Township TVC for hosting the championship, describing the institution’s role as a sign of growing confidence in its capacity to stage major regional events.
He said co-curricular activities remain central to holistic education in TVET institutions, highlighting their role in building teamwork, resilience, and discipline among trainees.
“These championships are more than competition; they are a celebration of talent, hard work, and dedication. Sports play a vital role in shaping well-rounded graduates,” he said.
KATTI National Chairman Shadrack Tonui echoed similar sentiments, citing the success of athletes emerging from TVET institutions as evidence of the effectiveness of the championships in talent development.
He also called for increased investment in sports infrastructure across TVET institutions, noting that many still lack adequate or properly maintained playing grounds.
The Chief Principal of Kericho Township TVC urged continued commitment to sportsmanship and teamwork, saying the values displayed during the championship should extend beyond the field.
The event concluded with confirmation that qualifying teams will advance to the national championships in Nairobi, where they will compete against other regional winners for top honours.
