The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) has rolled out a nationwide capacity-building programme for about 22,000 Heads of Institutions (HOIs) to strengthen career guidance and support learners transitioning to Senior School.
The two-day virtual training, which began on September 24, 2026, is being conducted in five cohorts and focuses on learners in Grades 7, 8 and 9. The initiative is designed to equip school leaders with knowledge and skills to guide learners in making informed decisions on Senior School pathways, tracks and subject choices under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
KEMI said the programme will also enhance the ability of HOIs to engage parents and collaborate with teachers in supporting learners as they make critical decisions about their education and future careers.

Speaking during the official opening, KEMI Chief Executive Officer Dr Maurice Odondo urged participants to remain focused and actively engage throughout the sessions. He emphasised that effective career guidance is a vital component of CBE implementation, particularly as learners prepare to transition to Senior School.
The training comes as the education sector intensifies preparations for the new Senior School structure, which places greater emphasis on learners’ interests, abilities and career aspirations when making subject and pathway choices.

KEMI said the capacity-building programme is expected to improve the ability of school leaders to provide accurate information and support learners in navigating Senior School options.
The sessions are scheduled to conclude on October 2, 2026.
