Hundreds of students at Kivaywa Boys Senior School in Lugari Constituency were left stranded after a dormitory was destroyed by fire on Sunday evening, disrupting learning and raising concerns over accommodation for affected learners.

The fire, whose cause had not been established by the time of going to press, reduced the dormitory to ashes, leaving students counting losses as investigations got underway. No injuries or fatalities were immediately reported.

Efforts to reach the school’s principal, Enos Lichuma, for comment was unsuccessful.

In the aftermath of the incident, Lugari Member of Parliament, Nabii Nabwera, visited the school to console the affected learners, particularly the Form Four candidates preparing for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Addressing the students, the legislator urged them to remain calm and focused despite the setback, assuring them of his support during the difficult period.

He encouraged the candidates not to allow the fire incident to derail their academic ambitions, emphasizing that resilience and determination would help them overcome the challenge as they prepare for their national examinations.

MP Nabii also appealed to the learners to remain patient as authorities investigate the cause of the fire, noting that the findings would help establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The dormitory fire is expected to pose temporary accommodation challenges for the affected students, with education stakeholders expected to work together to restore normalcy and ensure learning continues uninterrupted.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
