A dormitory at Kakamega High School was on Friday night destroyed by fire, prompting the school administration to release students as a precautionary measure amid growing concerns over dormitory fires in learning institutions.

The affected dormitory, identified as Hobley House, was engulfed in flames in an incident whose cause remains unknown. However, all students were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Confirming the incident, Chief Principal Dr. Elphas Aliva said the school had taken immediate steps to ensure the safety of learners following the fire outbreak.

Under the prevailing circumstances facing schools across the country, the administration opted not to take any chances, releasing students to travel home on Saturday morning as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

The incident comes on the same night that a dormitory fire was reported at Khasoko Boys Senior School. According to reports, the outbreak followed student unrest but was swiftly contained before it could spread, averting major damage.

School officials at Khasoko Boys moved quickly to restore order, with the situation returning to normal shortly after the incident.

The twin fire incidents have once again placed the spotlight on safety and security in boarding schools, with education stakeholders calling for heightened vigilance and strengthened fire-prevention measures to protect learners and school property.

Authorities are expected to investigate both incidents as efforts continue to establish the causes of the fires. Meanwhile, parents and education officials have expressed relief that no lives were lost in either incident.
