Ongata Rongai residents in Kajiado North Constituency have called on the government to take
action on individuals behind a septic tank that killed a young boy.
The six-year boy who is a student at Trinity School died on Thursday after drowning in a septic
tank while playing outside their home in Rongai town.
The deceased’s mother Anne Gati said she was attending to her maize hawking business when she
received a call that her child has plunged into the septic tank.
It took three hours to rescue the boy who sadly passed on at Nairobi Women’s
Hospital in Ongata Rongai.
“I was called at 4:30 pm and informed that my child had drowned, I rushed to the scene and
found he had been removed and taken to the hospital where he passed on,” she said.
The woman said she has lived in the area for seven years and was not aware that there was such
septic tank.
The distressed single mother said the only thing she needed was justice for her only child.
The father of the boy is not in the country.
Halima Guyo a resident of Nkaimurunya Ward said the water in the septic tank was too much and they
had to get a water pump to pump out some water but it took them too long.
In the hospital, they tried to resuscitate him but it was too late.
Locals called on security officers to investigate the incident and take action against the owner of the
septic tank, they accused the owner of negligence and the government of slow response in
handling the matter.
The residents said there are many septic tanks that are not fenced in the area which are death traps to children.
