Continuing university students who have not yet applied for their subsequent Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans have been given an additional two weeks to submit their applications.
HELB announced the extension on Monday, September 7, 2026, giving eligible continuing students until Monday, September 21, 2026, to complete their applications. The extension comes after the initial application window closed on August 31, with students reporting difficulties accessing or completing the application process. HELB said the additional period will give continuing students who missed the earlier deadline another opportunity to apply and benefit from government financial support.
The subsequent loan is intended for continuing students who have previously benefited from HELB funding and require financial assistance for the next academic year.

The wider 2026/2027 government funding application exercise has also involved university students and TVET trainees. By the initial August 31 deadline, the government had received 789,422 funding applications, while Sh22.12 billion had already been disbursed in first-semester and term funding to continuing university students and TVET trainees.
Eligible continuing students can apply through the HELB Mobile App or by dialling *642# using a Safaricom line. Applicants have been advised to complete the process before the new September 21 deadline to avoid missing out on the available funding.
The extension provides a fresh opportunity for students who were unable to submit their applications during the initial window, and comes as universities begin a new academic year.
