A cloud of grief has descended on Moi Girls Vokoli following the sudden death of a Form Four student, One Mitchelle, who collapsed under circumstances that remain unclear.
The tragedy has prompted the school administration to temporarily release learners to their homes as they cope with the emotional impact of the incident.
The student died on the evening of Tuesday, June 16, shortly after learners had completed their evening preparation classes.
In a statement issued by Chief Principal and Board of Management Secretary Hellen Mabese Luhangala, the school said the learner collapsed while collecting water near the institution’s Old Administration Block.
She was rushed to Sabatia Health Centre for emergency treatment, but medical personnel later pronounced her dead after monitoring her for a short period.
Family Notified
School records indicate that the deceased was a Form Four candidate and a total orphan.
The administration said the student’s guardian and other family members had been notified and were working closely with the school as burial and other arrangements continue.
The circumstances surrounding the student’s death remain unknown.
Her body was transferred to the mortuary at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where it awaits a post-mortem examination expected to establish the cause of death.
Education authorities and investigators are expected to await the findings of the examination before providing further information regarding the incident.
School Community in Mourning
The loss has compounded sorrow within the school community, coming barely two months after the death of a Form Three student in a separate incident.
The two tragedies have reportedly taken a heavy emotional toll on both learners and staff, with the administration noting growing psychological distress among students.
To allow learners time to heal and receive support, the school management resolved to suspend learning temporarily and send students home.
The student’s sudden collapse and death have raised concern among parents and members of the public, many of whom are calling for comprehensive investigations to establish exactly what happened.
