Governor warns perpetrators of FGM, calls for protection of school girls

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire has warned perpetrators of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that they will face the full force of the law.

While addressing locals at Manyatta, Mbarire said many perpetrators of this illegal practice take advantage of students while they are in holiday to engage them and warned that the exercise will not be tolerated.

She instead urged the residents to respect and protect school children and treat them as their own.

“Those who are thinking that we are going to allow our girls to be circumcised should forget it. Who told you that that part is not required? We won’t allow that. Let our girls have a chance to study,” said Mbarire.

Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki Njeru noted that the county was ranked position 4 across the 47 counties regarding FGM, terming the trend as worrying and needing a multispectral approach to stop it.

“Manyatta Constituency has the lead in FGM cases followed by Runyenjes, Mbeere North and Mbeere South. We really need to open our eyes and do something,” added Njoki.

She further discouraged the formation of Kangaroo courts to solve cases of defilement and warned that all participators and facilitators will be arrested and charged in courts of law.
