The Government has stepped up efforts to strengthen special needs education through the establishment of Educational Assessment and Resource Centres across the country.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba on Friday visited the site of the proposed Coast Region Educational Assessment and Resource Centre and the Tom Mboya School for Children with Cerebral Palsy in Mombasa County. The projects are part of the Government’s broader reforms in the education sector aimed at improving quality, access and retention while ensuring that learners with special needs are not left behind.
The Educational Assessment and Resource Centres will play a key role in the early identification of learners with special needs, professional assessment and appropriate educational placement. The Government says the centres will help ensure that children requiring specialised support are identified early and linked to suitable learning programmes and services, an initiative expected to strengthen the capacity of the education system to respond to the diverse needs of learners, particularly those living with disabilities.

The visit to Tom Mboya School for Children with Cerebral Palsy also highlighted the Government’s focus on improving learning environments and support systems for children with disabilities. The CS was accompanied by, among other officials, Kenya Institute of Special Education Director General Dr Norman Kiogora.
The establishment of the centres across the country is expected to enhance coordination among education stakeholders and provide families with easier access to assessment and placement services. The Government has maintained that inclusivity remains a key pillar of its education reforms, with special attention being given to learners who require additional support to participate effectively in education.

The facility is expected to serve learners and families from the region once completed, reducing the challenges associated with accessing specialised assessment and resource services.
