Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has thanked President William Ruto for appointing him as a commissioner of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), pledging to champion teacher welfare and reforms aimed at strengthening the education sector.
Speaking during the G20 Economic Empowerment Programme at Itembe in Nyangores Ward, Chepalungu Constituency, Bomet County, Sossion said he was honoured by the confidence the President had shown in him through the appointment.
He pledged to serve diligently, uphold the constitutional mandate of the Commission and work with fellow commissioners to improve service delivery within the teaching service.
Teacher welfare among priorities
Sossion said his priorities would include supporting reforms that enhance the quality of education, strengthen teacher professionalism and improve the welfare of teachers across the country.
He noted that education plays a critical role in national development and pledged to support policies that promote accountability, efficiency and excellence within the teaching service.
Having previously served at the helm of KNUT, Sossion brings to the Commission years of experience in teachers’ union leadership and advocacy on matters affecting educators.
He reiterated his commitment to serving teachers fairly and transparently while ensuring TSC remains responsive to the needs of the teaching profession.
Collaboration on education reforms
Sossion said he would work closely with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to support the effective implementation of ongoing education reforms.
He said cooperation among institutions and education stakeholders would be critical in ensuring reforms benefit learners, teachers and schools.
The former union leader also emphasised the importance of strengthening teacher professionalism as part of efforts to improve the quality of education.
Sossion further called on Kenyans to support the government’s development agenda, saying sustained investment in education would equip young people with the knowledge and skills required to contribute to the country’s economic growth.
He pledged to discharge his responsibilities at TSC in accordance with the Commission’s constitutional mandate while promoting fairness, transparency and improved services for teachers.

His entry into the Commission marks a new chapter for the former KNUT Secretary-General, who now moves from representing teachers through the trade union movement to serving in the constitutional body responsible for managing the teaching service.
