Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko visited students admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital following the tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil that claimed the lives of 16 girls.
He expressed deep sorrow after interacting with the injured students, describing their experiences as heartbreaking.
He noted that despite the trauma they endured, most of the learners are now stable and showing steady signs of recovery.
As a gesture of support, he brought flowers and essential items to encourage the victims and reassure them that they are not alone during this difficult period.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured, calling for strength, comfort, and healing for all those affected.
Sonko also called for stronger support systems for fire disaster preparedness in schools across the country to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
He said the incident should serve as a wake-up call to strengthen emergency response mechanisms and ensure that all learning institutions are adequately equipped with safety measures.
He further urged relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the cause of the fire and bring those responsible to justice if foul play is established.
