Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has called on leaders and parents to set positive examples for the younger generation, warning that many of the challenges witnessed in schools mirror the behaviours displayed by adults.

His remarks come just days after the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls’ Senior Secondary School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which left several students dead and others injured, sparking a national debate on safety and discipline in learning institutions.

Speaking in Kipsaos, Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo‑Marakwet County, during a thanksgiving service and the Annual General Meeting of Kipsaos Boys High School, Murkomen emphasised the importance of mentorship programmes to instil values among children.

He noted that young people often emulate the conduct they observe from leaders and the broader political culture. “We must be role models for our children to inspire them and keep them away from negative influences,” he said, urging leaders at all levels to demonstrate responsibility and discipline.

Murkomen stressed that when leaders and parents live responsibly, children are more likely to embrace integrity and focus on achieving their dreams. He added that mentorship should be seen as a collective duty for the common good of society.

The CS was accompanied by ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui, Members of Parliament Gideon Kimaiyo (Keiyo South) and Adams Kipsanai (Keiyo North), Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek, Speaker Lawi Kibire, MCAs, and other leaders. Their presence underscored the importance of community leadership in shaping values among the youth.
