The Catholic Church, through Kisii Diocese Bishop Okemwa Mairura, has urged people from all walks of life, especially secondary school principals, to live exemplary lives that teenage learners in their institutions can emulate.
Speaking at his Mosocho home during the Mass memorial ceremony for his parents, the Bishop reminded principals to encourage learners to respect their parents not only because they pay school fees and provide needs like shelter, but because respect for parents is also a moral obligation and a commandment with the promise of long life.
The Mass was attended by many Catholic faithful, residents of Mosocho, and principals of Catholic schools from Kisii and Nyamira counties. The group was led by their Chairman and Secretary, Dr. Joyce Orioki of Nyaburu Girls and Dr. Ezekiel Okeyo of Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School, respectively. Mrs. Orioki thanked the Church for supporting schools to develop and promised that her group would continue to embrace Christian ethics to champion education development in the region.
Faithfuls who attended the Holy Mass took one minute to remember the 16 students of Utumishi Girls Academy and their families, praying for peace of mind for them during this time of national mourning.

Mrs. Orioki, who is a long serving chief principal, noted that Christian-sponsored secondary schools in the region bring several advantages that strengthen both learning and character formation. Discipline and moral instruction are consistently emphasized, giving students a clear framework for behavior that supports focus in class and reduces cases of indiscipline. The integration of spiritual formation with academics also helps learners develop resilience, integrity, and a sense of purpose, which often translates into steady performance and lower dropout rates.
Schools under church sponsorship also benefit from established management structures and community networks that aid in resource mobilization for infrastructure, laboratories, and learning materials. Partnerships between the Church, parents, and local leaders create accountability and a shared commitment to student welfare beyond the classroom.

Bishop Mairura’s message tied these advantages back to the role of school leaders. When principals model integrity, responsibility, and respect, those values filter down to teachers and students, creating a school culture where learning thrives. The combination of strong leadership, faith-based values, and community support positions Christian-sponsored schools to produce learners who are not only academically prepared but also grounded in ethics and service.
