Meru Varsity begins search for new VC

By John Majau

The Meru University of Science and Technology is recruiting a new Vice Chancellor to replace the embattled Prof. Japhet Magambo who was sent home last month.
This comes barely a month after Prof. Magambo was sent on terminal leave by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed
In a statement issued by the university council, the varsity is looking for a VC to fill the vacated office.
“The position requires a self-driven, innovative and visionary leader with the capacity to build a dynamic working team,” read the statement in part.
The CS visited the institution after the brutal killing of student leader Evans Njoroge during a protest against fees increase in February.
Amina, who addressed the media at the university after meeting with the university council under the chairmanship of Prof Dulacha Galgalo said they resolved that Prof. Magambo should proceed on leave pending the expiry of his contract in June.
However the university council had appointed Prof Charity Gichuki, who had been serving as the deputy VC in charge of finance and administration to take over in an acting capacity. The CS also sent condolences to the family of the slain student and promised that justice will prevail.
She said she had met the student leaders in her office and decided to meet with the university management to pass their concerns.
The CS, who was accompanied by University Education and Research Principal Secretary Micheni Ntiba asked the acting VC to engage the students and other education stakeholders to ensure that learning at the university run smoothly.
The recruitment of the new VC has been welcomed by most leaders from the county with former advisor on presidency on matters on education Dr Kilemi Mwiria saying the county will accept a VC from any region to take charge of the university.
He asked the Meru political class to support the new university management that will be set to lift the innovation standards.
