- MMUST has won the men’s title and Sigalagala National Polytechnic has claimed the women’s crown at the inaugural Inter-Institutional Peace Football Tournament in Kakamega.
- The tournament has brought together24 learning institutions, combining football with efforts to promote unity and peaceful coexistence among students.
- Governor Fernandes Barasa has pledged continued support for youth sporting initiatives and has announced that the Governor’s Cup will kick off on October 15.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Sigalagala National Polytechnic were crowned champions of the inaugural Inter-Institutional Peace Football Tournament after securing victories in the men’s and women’s finals, respectively at Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday.
MMUST produced a composed performance to beat Shamberere National Polytechnic 2-0 and claim the men’s title in the two-day competition. Sigalagala National Polytechnic, meanwhile, edged MMUST 1-0 in the women’s final to take home the ladies’ trophy.
The tournament, organised by the Western Kenya Students Association in partnership with the County Government of Kakamega, brought together 24 learning institutions in a competition that combined football with efforts to promote unity and peaceful coexistence among students.

MMUST’s victory earned the university Sh200,000, while runners-up Shamberere National Polytechnic received Sh100,000. Bushiangala Technical Training Institute (TTI), which finished third, pocketed Sh50,000. In the women’s category, champions Sigalagala National Polytechnic were awarded Sh100,000, with MMUST receiving Sh70,000 after finishing second. Shamberere National Polytechnic took third place and received Sh30,000.
The finals attracted a strong turnout at Bukhungu Stadium, with Governor Fernandes Barasa attending the closing ceremony alongside officials from the county government, education institutions and the football fraternity. Barasa commended the organisers for using football to bring students together and said the county government would continue supporting initiatives that provide young people with opportunities to develop and showcase their sporting talents.

The governor also said the tournament had set the stage for the upcoming Governor’s Cup, scheduled to kick off on October 15.
The event was attended by Steve Kimaiyo, representing President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, Mayoni MCA Fredrick Watitwa, Agriculture CECM Mophat Mandela and AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani, among other guests.
