Nyamira County gubernatorial aspirant Walter Onkundi Chanua has said he will improve the welfare of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers if elected governor in 2027.
Chanua was addressing members of the public in Nyamira town on Saturday, where residents gathered to hear his proposals.
He said ECDE teachers in the county had been neglected for too long despite playing a critical role in early learning.
Chanua said teachers at this level are important because they shape children during their formative years.
According to him, what a child becomes in future is largely influenced at the ECDE level, and those who handle learners at that stage must therefore be valued and supported.
He described ECDE teachers as nation builders who handle children at a delicate stage when their brains, character and discipline are developing.
Chanua decried that many continue to work on contractual terms while earning low salaries despite their qualifications and sacrifices.
Pledge on permanent terms
He promised that, if elected, his administration would seek to place ECDE teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, with improved salaries and allowances that reflect their work.
He also pledged to build and equip modern ECDE classrooms with learning materials, play equipment, clean water and proper sanitation to make learning more child-friendly.
The aspirant further promised to provide free learning materials and introduce a feeding programme for ECDE learners to improve enrolment and retention.
He added that his administration would offer continuous professional training and retooling for ECDE teachers to align them with Competency-Based Education.
Chanua said investing in ECDE amounted to investing in the future workforce of Nyamira County.
Walter Onkundi Chanua is among aspirants eyeing the Nyamira gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election. Recent public profiles identify him as a Nyamira gubernatorial aspirant with business interests in Narok and Nyamira counties.
He has also built a public profile through political mobilisation, community activities and fundraising engagements as he positions himself for the 2027 race.

His campaign message has centred on development, economic opportunities and improved service delivery across the county.
