Tinderet MP and National Assembly Education Committee Chairman Julius Melly is positioning his experience in education leadership as a key pillar of his bid to become the next Governor of Nandi County.
Melly says his decade-long involvement in steering parliamentary affairs on education has given him a deeper understanding of the challenges facing learners, teachers and education institutions, experience he intends to translate into practical programmes at the county level.
His proposed agenda places education at the centre of Nandi’s development, with a focus on strengthening Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), supporting teachers and creating better opportunities for learners. He argues that Nandi requires leadership that understands education not only as a social service but also as an investment in the county’s future workforce and economic development.
His education credentials have been central to his public career. Before joining Parliament, Melly worked as a teacher and later as a school principal, experiences he says have shaped his approach to education policy and leadership. He has served as Tinderet MP since 2013 and currently chairs the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education.

The proposed focus comes at a time when education remains a major concern for families in Nandi, with issues ranging from access to quality learning facilities to the rising cost of education and the need for greater support for vulnerable learners. Melly’s supporters are presenting his parliamentary experience as an advantage, arguing that his familiarity with the education sector could help the county develop policies that complement national government programmes while addressing challenges within devolved functions.
Melly is among several politicians positioning themselves to succeed Governor Stephen Sang, whose second and final term is set to end after the 2027 General Election. The contest for the seat has already attracted several aspirants and is expected to intensify as the elections approach.
