Students at Christ the King Kirwara Boys High School in Gatanga, Murang’a County, were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after a fire broke out at the institution, with footage from the scene showing flames spreading through parts of the school compound as a thick cloud of smoke rose into the air.
A school bus parked within the compound was reportedly among the property affected by the fire, though it remained unclear whether the vehicle caught fire before the blaze spread to other parts of the school. Several buildings within the institution were also reportedly affected as efforts to put out the fire continued. No injuries or deaths had been reported by the time of publication.
The school administration was said to be coordinating the evacuation and emergency response as firefighters worked to bring the situation under control. A Murang’a County fire engine was dispatched to the institution, while students were moved away from areas affected by the flames. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage remained unclear, with neither the school administration nor relevant authorities issuing an official statement.

The incident follows a fire reported a day earlier at a boys’ dormitory at St Michael Secondary School Kyenire in Mbeere North, Embu County, and comes a month after a fire at Jomo Kenyatta Boys’ High School in Nakuru County destroyed property at the institution.
Separately, a fire broke out in Gatwekera, Kibra, in Nairobi on Wednesday, destroying several houses and businesses, though a nearby school was not affected. The Nairobi County Government disaster management team responded to the Kibra incident after residents began efforts to contain the flames.
