Eldoret erupted in celebration on Tuesday as ACK Chepsaita Senior School’s boys’ volleyball team returned home to a rousing welcome, led by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii and Turbo MP Janet Sitienei, following a stunning silver medal finish at the FEASSSA Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Chepsaita, competing at FEASSSA for the first time, defied expectations to reach the final unbeaten, knocking out established sides including Tanzania’s Lumala and Uganda’s St Jerome and Bukedea Comprehensive School. Their run ended in a five-set thriller against Uganda’s Namugongo Secondary and Vocational College, with Chepsaita falling 18-25, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22, 14-16.
Bii declared the players county sporting heroes. “Chepsaita went to Tanzania as underdogs and has come back as giants,” he said, announcing that the team would be honoured during the county’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, 2026. He also promised a wider push to strengthen school sports across the county, saying his administration would support the specialised training of 1,500 coaches in public schools.

Head coach Boniface Sang said the tournament had exposed his players to the demands of top-level East African volleyball. “Many dismissed us, but the boys showed immense tactical discipline and heart against seasoned powerhouses,” he said. “We take the silver with pride, but our focus immediately shifts back to the training court to fix our slight errors.” Principal Kipruto Mibei said the school would increase investment in sports facilities and equipment as it targets a stronger campaign next year, describing the medal as “just the beginning of our journey.”
Turbo MP Sitienei hailed the players for putting the constituency on the regional sporting map and called for greater investment in identifying and developing talent from rural schools.

The celebrations also highlighted Uasin Gishu’s wider success at the games. Soin Primary School from Turbo impressed in its competition, while St Jacob’s produced 800m gold medallist Kong Riek, who said the victory had strengthened his ambition to compete at international championships. Chepsaita’s silver, however, remained the county’s headline achievement, a debut that turned an unheralded school into one of East Africa’s emerging volleyball forces.
