- The reception has followed the school’s 21–14 win over Koyonzo High School in an all-Kenyan final at the 22nd FEASSSA Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati has hailed Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School for its FEASSSA Rugby Sevens triumph, hosting the team for a hero’s homecoming reception at the Kisii Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) one day after schools reopened for the third term.
Arati praised the team for lifting the name of Kisii County high in the East African region, saying they had proved that talent nurtured in village schools can conquer the region. He announced that the county government will support the team with sports kits and a cash token to motivate them as they prepare for future assignments, and urged other schools in the county to emulate Cardinal Otunga Mosocho, promising that his administration will improve sports facilities in schools to nurture more talent.
The reception followed the school’s title win at the 22nd edition of the FEASSSA Games, held in Morogoro, Tanzania, from August 14 to 25, 2026, which brought together more than 3,000 students from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and Zanzibar competing in disciplines including football, rugby 7s and 15s, netball, basketball, volleyball, handball and athletics. Cardinal Otunga beat Kenya’s other representative and former champions Koyonzo High School 21–14 in an all-Kenyan final played on Sunday, marking the first time the Kisii-based school has won the regional trophy.

The school had qualified as national champions after beating Koyonzo High School in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national finals in Kakamega in early August, entering the regional finals as underdogs before going unbeaten through the tournament. In the group stages at Morogoro Secondary School grounds, they beat Uganda’s Jinja SSS 19–7, edged Rwanda’s GS Kivumu 12–5, and thrashed Tanzania’s Feza Boys 26–0 to top Pool B. In the quarterfinals, they eliminated Tanzania’s champions Tabora Boys 17–10, before seeing off defending champions St. Mary’s Kisubi of Uganda 14–12 in a tense semi-final decided by a last-minute try.
The school’s head coach, Mr. Evans Mogere, attributed the victory to discipline, early preparations and support from the school administration led by Chief Principal Mr. Ezekiel Okeyo, saying the boys trained for three months without break while maintaining high academic discipline.

Team manager Bulky Onduso lauded the boys for showing high discipline while abroad, which he said enabled them to pose a greater challenge to their opponents, adding that their success is a harbinger of prosperity for the school and for Kisii County at large. Principal Okeyo said the victory was a result of the school’s deliberate investment in both academics and co-curricular activities, thanking parents, the Board of Management and the Kisii County Government for supporting the team through the national and East Africa games.
