Stakeholders in Nandi County have urged teachers to refrain from taking a frontline role in ongoing political rallies, warning that their involvement could expose them to unnecessary risks as political temperatures rise in the county.
Speaking in Nandi Hills town, the stakeholders cited an incident last week in which a youth, later identified as a teacher at one of the primary schools in the area, was allegedly mishandled by supporters of one of the gubernatorial aspirants after he uttered remarks contrary to the views being expressed at the meeting. The stakeholders said the incident was a worrying reminder of the dangers teachers could face when they take prominent positions in politically charged gatherings.
“Teachers have a responsibility to educate and mentor our children. We cannot afford to lose them because of political differences,” the stakeholders said, adding that they were not ready to lose teachers to the political temperatures currently being witnessed across the county and urging educators to exercise caution and keep away from confrontational political activities.

The stakeholders further urged political leaders and their supporters to respect teachers and avoid dragging educators into political confrontations, noting that teachers play a critical role in the community and should be protected from situations that could threaten their safety or undermine their professionalism. They called on teachers to remain focused on their core duties while exercising their democratic rights responsibly and avoiding political gatherings where tensions could easily escalate.

The appeal comes amid increased political activity in Nandi, with various leaders and their supporters holding rallies and public meetings ahead of the next political contest. The stakeholders maintained that while teachers, like other citizens, have a right to hold political views, their safety and professional responsibilities should remain a priority.
