Fresh from captaining Kakamega School to the 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Boys’ Football Championship, Fidel Odhiambo has flown to the United States after securing a football scholarship that will see him combine higher education with elite football development.
Odhiambo left Kenya shortly after helping Kakamega School edge St Mary’s School Yala 3-2 in a thrilling national final at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy in Thika.
The victory crowned Kakamega as the 2026 national champions and marked a memorable end to the skipper’s secondary school football career.
Green Commandos reclaim national title
The influential captain was among the standout performers throughout the tournament, inspiring the Green Commandos with his leadership and defensive prowess as they reclaimed the coveted title.
Instead of joining the team’s celebrations for long, Odhiambo immediately embarked on the next chapter of his career, flying to the United States to begin life as a student-athlete under a football scholarship programme.
The scholarship offers him a rare opportunity to pursue academic excellence while continuing to develop his football talent in one of the world’s most competitive school sports systems.
